Average Cost Of Furnishing A 2 Bedroom Apartment

Average Cost Of Furnishing A 2 Bedroom Apartment

Here's What an Average Apartment Costs in 50 US Cities

See what a one-bedroom apartment for rent costs in major cities.

It typically costs less to own a home than to rent one in most cities. So if homeownership is out of reach for you — or just doesn't appeal to you — you can still find affordable options.

However, the potential financial benefits of renting are greatly diminished if you're overpaying for rent. That's why it's important to compare the average U.S. rent to rent prices in your area. Fortunately, GOBankingRates did the research for you. The study looks at various factors in each city, including the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment, the monthly cost of basic utilities and the city's walkability score — in addition to identifying the percentage of apartments in each city with some popular amenities. The following list can help you nail down the best places to rent an apartment.

Average Apartment Rent in Albuquerque, N.M.

  • Median rent for one-bedroom apartment: $745
  • Basic utilities: $112.04
  • Walkability score: 43/100

Percentage of apartments with:

  • Dishwasher: 51%
  • Washer-dryer unit: 41%
  • Pool: 51%
  • Fitness center: 41%
  • Pets allowed: 50%
  • Parking garage: 18%

Albuquerque is among the cheapest major cities in terms of average apartment rent, and the average rate for basic utilities is less than all but two other cities listed here. But you might be spending the money you save on basic utilities to cover transportation costs because Albuquerque ranks among the bottom half of cities for walkability. Still, Albuquerque's low rent and otherwise affordable costs are part of why it's one of the best places to live on a fixed income.

Average Apartment Rent in Arlington, Texas

  • Median rent for one-bedroom apartment: $950
  • Basic utilities: $160.55
  • Walkability score: 37/100

  • Dishwasher: 80%
  • Washer-dryer: 42%
  • Pool: 82%
  • Fitness center: 71%
  • Pets allowed: 79%
  • Parking garage: 38%

If you're looking for cheap rentals, your search might take you to Arlington. Apartments are more affordable there than in the majority of other large cities on this list, making it no surprise that it's one of the cities where it's cheaper to rent than to own. Plus, the cost of basic utilities is slightly lower than the average cost across the 50 cities surveyed.

Average Apartment Rent in Atlanta

  • Median rent for one-bedroom apartment: $1,502
  • Basic utilities: $160.97
  • Walkability score: 49/100

  • Washer-dryer unit: 15%
  • Pool: 39%
  • Fitness center: 81%
  • Pets allowed: 29%
  • Parking garage: 23%

Atlanta is among the 20 priciest cities if you're looking for apartments for rent. However, it's more walkable than about half of the cities in GOBankingRates' study. But for that rent, you're probably getting more than in most places. Georgia is among the top 10 states where $1,500 in rent gets you the most.

Average Apartment Rent in Austin, Texas

  • Median rent for one-bedroom apartment: $1,200
  • Basic utilities: $151.41
  • Walkability score: 40/100

  • Washer-dryer: 39%
  • Pool: 62%
  • Fitness center: 54%
  • Pets allowed: 62%
  • Parking garage: 33%

Austin has both the highest percentage of apartments with dishwashers and with fitness centers. But that might be coming at a cost: Aside from Colorado Springs, Colo., Austin is one of the cities where cost of living is rising the fastest. So if you're waiting to start your search for places for rent, you could just be increasing what you'll ultimately pay.

Among one-bedroom apartments for rent, the median monthly cost in Baltimore is higher than in more than half of the cities in the study. The cost of utilities also is higher than in most cities. But Baltimore is one of the most walkable cities in the survey. Still, anyone interested in the area has to make a decision between Baltimore and nearby Washington, D.C.

  • Pool: 20%
  • Fitness center: 29%
  • Pets allowed: 26%
  • Parking garage: 17%

If you're looking for cheap apartments for rent, don't look in Boston: It has the sixth-highest median rent in this study. Basic utilities for a one-bedroom apartment are also among the 10 most expensive. Boston does have the fourth-best walkability score, though, so you might be able to offset high rent and utility costs with low transportation costs. It's part of why plenty of Boston residents are struggling with the decision about whether to rent or own in Beantown.

Average Apartment Rent in Charlotte, N.C.

  • Median rent for one-bedroom apartment: $1,275

  • Fitness center: 46%

Average Apartment Rent in Dallas

  • Pool: 84%
  • Fitness center: 75%

  • Parking garage: 40%

Some renters might grumble that the only thing that's "mile-high" about Denver is the rent — the city ranks among the top 15 cities for the steepest apartment cost. And the market doesn't improve a lot for buyers, either: Denver is one of the cities where less than half the population can afford to buy a home.

Fortunately for Denver residents, it has the fourth-lowest utilities cost in the study and is among the 20 most walkable cities.

Average Apartment Rent in Detroit

  • Basic utilities: $154.84

  • Fitness center: 65%
  • Pets allowed: 74%

Omaha is known for its famous resident: billionaire investor Warren Buffett. But you don't have to be super rich to live in this city. Not only does it fall just shy of sub-$800 a month rent, but the cost of utilities for a one-bedroom apartment is also below average.

The drawback to renting in Omaha is that you'll likely need a car because the city has a mediocre walkability score. Fortunately, it also has the highest percentage of apartments with a parking garage of any city in the study.
