If you're looking for cheap apartments for rent, don't look in Boston: It has the sixth-highest median rent in this study. Basic utilities for a one-bedroom apartment are also among the 10 most expensive. Boston does have the fourth-best walkability score, though, so you might be able to offset high rent and utility costs with low transportation costs. It's part of why plenty of Boston residents are struggling with the decision about whether to rent or own in Beantown.

Fortunately for Denver residents, it has the fourth-lowest utilities cost in the study and is among the 20 most walkable cities.

The drawback to renting in Omaha is that you'll likely need a car because the city has a mediocre walkability score. Fortunately, it also has the highest percentage of apartments with a parking garage of any city in the study.

Tulsa might not be the outright winner in this study — tying El Paso's median rent of $599 a month — but if you make the cost based on area the tie-breaker, it's the clear champion. At 88 cents per square foot, it's the cheapest in the study and 5 cents cheaper than El Paso.

The most expensive city in which to rent that's not in the Bay Area is New York, but Washington, D.C., is just behind it with residents spending over $2,200 a month for a median one-bedroom apartment.

Last but not least — or rather, last and ALMOST least — Wichita is just $26 a month away from tying El Paso and Tulsa for the lowest median rent on a one-bedroom apartment as well. That's largely in line with the low rents generally paid across the Midwest.

How Much Is an Apartment? It Depends on Where You Live

Renting in a major American city is an experience that can be vastly different depending on where you live, with the gap between the most and least expensive reaching $2,801. It might come as no surprise to many that densely populated coastal cities tend to be the priciest with cities in the Midwest tending to boast the most affordable options.
